One of the most influential memories as a young kid who loved to tell stories and make art was an author visit I attended in 4th grade. I got to hear Jon Scieszka read from The Time Warp Trio and The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs! at the elementary school that my mom worked at. (Added bonus: skipping school … to go to a different school!) As he signed my books, I sheepishly shared that I hoped to be a writer when I grew up.
His response: “Are you writing now?” (Yes.) “Then you’re already a writer. You don’t have to wait until you grow up!” That interaction stuck with me. A professional writer I admired and who made me laugh and told such wonderful stories assured me I was already writer?! I was floored ... and inspired. I’m still floored and inspired! I’ve carried that passion, to celebrate and amplify youth voices, with me in every facet of my professional and personal life—as a former high school teacher, co-founder of a youth writing center, literacy advocate, and author/illustrator.
Meeting students, connecting with young readers, writing and making art alongside kids … it’s just the best! I want to come to your school, your library, and your special events!

“We loved the visit! Emmy was very engaging. She took the time to answer student questions and draw based on their suggestions. She read her book that hadn’t even been released yet which was very exciting to the students. We would definitely love to have her back!
